Turner, Cashman Spark Takeaway as Vikings Defense Shuts Down Dolphins

A forced fumble by Dallas Turner and recovery by Blake Cashman highlighted a strong defensive effort as the Vikings improved to 4-0 with a 15-10 win over Miami.

A gang-tackle on what officials initially ruled an incomplete pass turned into one of the defining plays of Minnesota's 15-10 win over Miami on Sunday. Pressure from Andrew Van Ginkel and a mid-air hit from Dallas Turner jarred the ball loose from quarterback Malik Willis, and Blake Cashman recovered it after a bounce. Vikings Head Coach Kevin O'Connell successfully challenged the initial incomplete-pass ruling to confirm the turnover, according to Vikings.com.

Cashman pointed to the play as representative of the defense's committee approach this season, telling the team's website that the group preaches "team defense" and finds satisfaction in seeing different players make plays rather than chasing individual recognition. He finished with eight tackles, a quarterback hit and the fumble recovery — the fifth of his career. Turner recorded both of Minnesota's sacks on Willis to go with three tackles. Eric Wilson added four tackles and Jalen Redmond had three, with several other defenders contributing two tackles apiece, including Van Ginkel in his first game against his former team.

Minnesota has not allowed an opponent multiple touchdowns in a game since Week 1, per Vikings.com. Miami managed only eight first downs in its first trip to U.S. Bank Stadium since 2018 and converted just 2 of 9 third-down attempts, holding the ball for only 20 minutes, 49 seconds. Willis completed 9 of 17 passes for 85 yards with no touchdowns and a 67.0 passer rating.

Not everything went Minnesota's way. Running back Ollie Gordon II turned a third-and-5 situation into a 53-yard run in the third quarter. Safety Joshua Metellus, playing his 100th career game with the Vikings, credited Miami's play call rather than a defensive breakdown, according to Vikings.com. The Vikings held that drive to a field goal, but Willis later connected twice with Malik Washington for 17-yard gains before Gordon scored from 12 yards out. Gordon finished with exactly 100 yards on nine carries; Washington caught five passes for 67 yards, the only Dolphin besides Gordon with more than one reception. O'Connell praised the defense after the game, specifically calling Turner "an every-week impactor at a high, high level," per Vikings.com, while crediting Cashman and other contributors.

The win pushed the Vikings to 4-0, extending a winning streak that, including the end of last season, now stands at nine games. Cornerback Isaiah Rodgers downplayed the streak's significance in comments to Vikings.com, saying the current roster is focused on a game-by-game approach rather than carryover success from a year ago, though he acknowledged being "grateful" for the 4-0 start and the two divisional wins it includes.

Metellus struck a similar note about the team's growth, telling Vikings.com he believes the group's chemistry and unity make it "a hell of a team to beat" if it continues developing. Minnesota next travels to face New Orleans before its bye week.
