Vikings Survive Buccaneers Behind Special Teams, Defense to Start 3-0

Minnesota escaped Tampa Bay thanks to a punt-return touchdown and a strong defensive effort, though Justin Jefferson's ankle injury clouded an otherwise sluggish offensive outing.

The Minnesota Vikings are 3-0 after a win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a result that was far from clean but kept Minnesota among the NFL's unbeaten teams heading into the fourth week of the season, according to a report from Vikings Territory, which cited ESPN information in its reporting.

The win puts Minnesota atop the NFC playoff picture early, though the report notes the offense has been inconsistent through three games and still has issues to address. The Vikings are set to return home to face an 0-3 Miami Dolphins team next.

A significant concern from Sunday's game was an ankle injury to receiver Justin Jefferson, according to the report. Aside from a 22-yard completion from quarterback Kyler Murray to Jefferson early in the game and a couple of deep throws to Jordan Addison, the Vikings offense produced little in the way of explosive plays. Murray finished 16 of 31 passing for 168 yards, numbers the report attributes at least partly to the absence of a fully healthy Jefferson. How the injury affects Minnesota's offense going forward remains unclear.

Special teams played a central role in the victory, per the report. Myles Price returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown that helped Minnesota build a 10-0 lead roughly six and a half minutes into the game. Johnny Hekker, filling in for an injured Brett Thorson, punted eight times for a 46.5-yard average and dropped two inside the 20 without a touchback. Kicker Will Reichard made all three of his field-goal attempts, including two from beyond 50 yards.

The defense also turned in a strong performance, recording six sacks and holding Tampa Bay to just 57 rushing yards on 21 carries, according to the report. Buccaneers receiver Jalen McMillan and quarterback Baker Mayfield both left the game with injuries, the latter with a dislocated thumb before Tampa Bay's final possession.

The Vikings' defensive front has looked like one of the league's better units through three weeks, based on the sack and rushing-yard figures cited in the report. Whether Minnesota's offense can match that level of play, particularly if Jefferson's injury lingers, is likely to shape how far this team can go this season.
