Former Minnesota Vikings edge rusher Cam'Ron Stewart is working out for the Arizona Cardinals, according to a September 15 report from Aaron Wilson of KPRC2. The tryout comes days after the Vikings released the undrafted rookie, who had initially appeared likely to stick on Minnesota's practice squad before a series of roster moves led to his departure.
Stewart, 23, went undrafted out of Temple and signed with the Vikings for just $1,000 in guarantees. He ran a 4.56-second 40-yard dash and posted an 8.16 Relative Athletic Score, according to figures cited in the report. In his final college season, Stewart recorded 32 tackles, including 10.5 for loss, along with 5 sacks, a forced fumble and a pass breakup. He also earned a 90.4 pass-rushing grade from PFF last year, per the report.
At 6-foot-4 and about 245 pounds, Stewart is undersized for the edge position by NFL standards, though his athletic testing numbers stand out relative to his size. His production came against Temple's schedule rather than against premier competition, which tempers how much weight to put on the raw statistics.
Arizona's depth chart at edge rusher is currently led by Josh Sweat and Baron Browning. The report notes the Cardinals' broader roster includes head coach Mike LaFleur, rookie running back Jeremiyah Love, tight end Trey McBride and receiver Marvin Harrison, though it does not tie Stewart's tryout directly to any specific plan involving those players.
In Minnesota, the Vikings' edge rotation is headed by Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner, both of whom played well in Week 1, with Turner drawing particular praise in his third season. Kyle Van Noy, Bo Richter and Chaz Chambliss round out the group, with linebackers Eric Wilson and Jake Golday and defensive lineman Ty Ingram-Dawkins also capable of taking snaps on the edge if needed.
Whether Stewart lands with Arizona remains unresolved. A workout does not guarantee a roster spot.
