The Minnesota Vikings wasted no time addressing their secondary needs, agreeing to terms with veteran cornerback James Pierre on a two-year, $8.5 million contract that includes $3.7 million guaranteed and a $2.5 million signing bonus.
Pierre, who spent the past five seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, brings exactly the kind of experienced depth the Vikings need after a 2025 season where cornerback injuries created significant vulnerabilities. His versatility to play both outside and in the slot gives defensive coordinator Brian Flores additional flexibility in his aggressive pressure packages.
How Does Pierre Fit Into Flores' Defensive Scheme?
In Flores' system, cornerbacks are asked to play significant man coverage to free up the front seven for creative blitz designs. Pierre's press-man technique grades out favorably — he posted an 81.2 coverage grade in man coverage on PFF last season. Paired with Byron Murphy Jr. on the outside, Pierre gives the Vikings a respectable tandem while they potentially target a cornerback in the 2026 NFL Draft.
